Trump’s idiotic approach to everything has consequences. His base is irrational and acts like a cult, impervious to facts.

Meanwhile, taking an approach that would grow the economy and create new technology is attacked by the reactionary know nothings Trump has elevated because it’s not coal (which is never ever ever coming back - or getting back together again).

OK, this is something straight out of Kolchak: The Night Stalker.

German police said on Monday they had found the corpses of two women in an apartment belonging to one of three people found dead, pierced by crossbow bolts, on Saturday in a guesthouse in the southern city of Passau.

A spokesman for state prosecutors in Passau said the two dead women were found in the town of Wittingen in the northwestern state of Lower Saxony. One of the victims in the Passau deaths, a 30-year-old woman, lived in Wittingen, according to prosecutors.

The identity of the women found in Wittingen and any possible connection to the events in Passau have still to be established, police said.

Three Crossbows

The mystery began on Saturday when an employee in the guesthouse in Passau found three guests — a 53-year-old man, a 33-year-old woman and a 30-year-old woman — dead in a room with crossbow bolts in their bodies. The 53-year-old was lying on a bed hand in hand with the 33-year-old, while the 30-year-old was discovered on the floor.

News from the Idiocracy:
Tennessee judge posts link on Facebook saying Jews should ‘get the f**k over the Holocaust’

A Tennessee judge posted racist and anti-Semitic articles on his Facebook page, including one saying that Jews should “get the f**k over the Holocaust.”

A coalition of organizations, including Jewish ones, have called for a reprimand of Jim Lammey of the Shelby County Criminal Court.

Lammey posted a link to an article written by known Holocaust denier David Cole that referred to Muslim immigrants as “foreign mud” and made the Holocaust slur. He also shared anti-immigration articles, memes and conspiracy theories, The Commercial Appeal reported.

The judge has denied being racist or anti-Semitic and says he has the right to free speech, according to the report. He also says that nothing that he has shared on Facebook would prevent him from judging all cases fairly.

“I certainly don’t agree with that, being a Holocaust denier. My best friend — who’s deceased now — was Jewish and I wouldn’t do that,” he told The Commercial Appeal.

The book on the shelf behind Judge Drek here is A Patriot’s History of the Modern World, a right wing revisionist tome devoted to the proposition that the “4 pillars of American Exceptionalism” are “common law, a Christian (mostly Protestant) religious culture, access to private property…and free market capitalism,”

My relatives in rural America may not be totally on board with this from this point on.

The food banks in Central Wisconsin are seeing a MASSIVE uptick in farm families coming in. Silent, hollow-eyed, shuffling through the aisles, desperate for something to eat.

Still reflexively, mindlessly supporting Trump and the GOP. Because Fox News & radio propaganda.

But if they keep hearing talking heads on Fox basically telling them that their suffering isn’t real and that they should just shut up …

Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) downplayed the “sacrifice” that farmers will have to make to adjust to tariffs on Chinese imports by calling the offering “minimal” in comparison with what soldiers and “fallen heroes” make.

“There will be some sacrifices on the part of Americans, I grant you that, but I also would say that sacrifice is pretty minimal compared to the sacrifices that our soldiers make overseas that are fallen heroes that are laid to rest in Arlington make,” he told “CBS This Morning” as Gayle King pushed back, saying “you can’t compare those two sacrifices.”

“When I’m at home in Arkansas, I hear from farmers who are worried about opening up new markets and getting their products to market, but they also understand that China is a serious competitor to the United States and wants to displace us around the world,” he said. “And they look at the sacrifices that soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines make around the world and they’re willing to bear some of the sacrifices in the short term, to hopefully in the long term to ensure our longterm prosperity and security.”

Support for Israel used to mean a shared democratic experience but now it’s becoming shared belief in ethnic based nationalism and I blame Bibi for that. It alienates people and makes it harder to argue why Israel should be supported. I still will always support Israel’s right to exist but I won’t let assholes call me Antisemitic because I don’t like Bibi for being a bigoted crook. After the Yugoslav wars, my earliest international memory is of Rabin’s assassination and I’ve always felt Jews should never be treated like the “other” in our or any society.

BTI 2018 | Hungary Country Report

“…there are numerous elements of the electoral system that consistently favor right-wing forces (e.g., gerrymandered constituency map) and rules that provide advantages to the governing party. One example is that the government can run a virtually unrestricted campaign under the guise of public service advertisements, while parties are de facto banned from broadcasting political advertisements on commercial TV and radio channels. Due to the near-unlimited public financial resources available to the government, it can exploit that there are no regulations in place on campaign activities outside of the 50-day-long campaign period. Moreover, pseudo-civil society organizations can also campaign without restrictions, and laws regulating their obligation to account for their expenses are even laxer than they are for political parties.”

“The Hungarian system of political institutions confers largely unconstrained authority to the elected parliamentary majority and the government elected by it. This was already the case before 2010, but since the new constitution and the erosion of the system of checks and balances, its subordination to governmental control boosted the government’s power further. Power is concentrated in the hands of the head of government, and important decisions are determined by the prime minister’s inner circle.”

This should bother people more than criticizing Israel on policy but don’t worry Israel’s non Jewish supporters won’t care because all that matters to them is unconditional support for Bibi and not support for the Jewish people.

re: #57 Eclectic Cyborg

I can say with certainty that there are plenty of people in rural, more conservative leaning areas that would be ostracized from the majority of their social circle if they voted against Trump.

For some of these folks, voting Democratic is more sinful than adultery or rape.

That’s why we have a secret ballot.

Democrats are never going to get the votes of the worst of the Deplorables, but ISTM there’s a huge large crop of votes “out there” to be harvested pitching the Dems as “The Farmers’ Friend(s)” - and pointing out - in no uncertain terms - that Donald Trump, with the connivance (or at least inaction) of the GOP is the one who has virtually singlehandedly destroyed their export market(s). Not being able to turn that sort of specific “economic anxiety” into votes would be to me, political malpractice at an incredible level…..

Periodically, I point out that 90% of what is said about the attitudes of the great mass of DT voters in this space has not a trace of supporting evidence. This is one of those times. It has nothing to do with counting (or counting on) people.

If you’ve got limited resources (divers, explosives, etc.,) you aren’t going to focus on high riding tankers - also known as empty tankers.

You’d target a couple of fully laden oil tankers to watch them blow up.

This is like a keystone cops version of some bad jobu trying to go down and no one seems to have their heart in it because they know all the consequences will be bad.

Just paged this: it turns out that 8Chan supports itself in its goal of inspiring hate-filled white incels to commit mass murder, by selling cheesy audiobooks on Amazon:

8Chan’s owner runs a pig farm in Phillippines. Kind of on the nose, really.

As a result, Amazon is likely a significant source of funding for 8chan. The website features a few advertisements from other sources.

Watkins selection of Amazon as his financial lifeline to the outside world is not an accident. The company does not run away from websites that others deem toxic. When thousands of advertisers abandoned Breitbart after the right-wing website featured racist categories like “black crime,” Amazon continued to run ads on the site.

I don’t know about that last part. OT1H, yes, it may make things look partisan. But on the other, it also makes it clear that there’s not a thing the Republicans could be exposed to—right down to a live shot of him signing the Trump Tower Moscow contract—that would lead to even one of them going against him, so therefore, the partisanship being shown might be toxic for their chances.

Yeah, they’re still railing about the border wall, and parroting the line that the trade wars are actually good for the economy, and things are going to turn around any second now … they’re so deep into Trump worship that they can’t even begin to imagine a world in which he is not their Lord And Savior.

My aunt worked with the laid-off paper mill workers in the Wausau area. Same thing with them. Trying to get them into retraining programs (and yeah, some of those were stupid, like the Mining Minds B.S. that’s getting so much attention this past weekend). But they were adamant and angry.

I’m just sick of people conflating criticism of Israeli policy with attacking the Jewish people. I think Tlaib could phrase better but it’s better than the right wingers who deny the Palestinians their very existence.

Best I can do is report back what my sane relatives report back from their conversations in Central Wisconsin, with the suffering farmers who still maintain that Trump is their hero.

Their attitudes are not going to change until they switch their media diet from AM radio all day and Fox News all night. Everything they hear is telling them that what Trump is doing is necessary, that the blowback is no big deal, and that those limp-wristed lib’rul pantywaists are overreacting as usual.

‘i know all i need to know’ is easier than challenging your own world-view

The Northern Kentucky region, which covers eight counties including Boone, Kenton, and Campbell, had the greatest surplus with more than 10,000 job openings than the total number of individuals searching. The Louisville Metro (Kentuckiana Works Region) area was not far behind, with just over 9,300 more job openings than individuals searching. South Central Kentucky, the Bluegrass Region surrounding Lexington, and the Green River region which includes Owensboro made up the final three surplus regions. Nearly 70% of Kentucky’s open jobs are in these five regions.”

I know for certain my mother’s people came here legally. They arrived in the 1880’s, when the only immigration law in existence was the Chinese Exclusion Act. They were very easily able to meet the requirement of being not Asian.

Dad’s people it’s a little more complicated; they came sometime in the 1920’s, they told me so many contradictory stories I can’t be sure if they did or didn’t beat the 1924 quotas. Dad was born January 1928 in Brooklyn; and since his parents were from 2 different countries they definitely met here; so it could go either way.

Supposedly, Liz Cheney has had her eye on a Senate seat for years, though Barasso was just reelected last year: I’d think Mike Enzi’s seat (up next year) would be a better shot. My approach has wavered a bit over the last few years. I know that policy-wise, there’s not very many candidates for any office that I’m probably going to agree with more than about 60% of the time. So for me it’s more about who do I trust to do the right thing when something unexpected happens. I’d also like someone who isn’t afraid to make a real effort to move public opinion on some issue rather than waiting for public opinion to shift enough - the big one out there, since same sex marriage and legalization of marijuana have already shifted would be the death penalty.

The funniest thing to me is the first time I remember the beer test was it in reference to Bush and frankly I get it’s not literal and I can see why people felt that way about Bush but Gore or Kerry both would be fine. Sometimes I want intelligent conversation with my beer. Sometimes I want to talk baseball and humor.

The full interview here:

DK: So congresswoman, you’ve created something of a stir by coming out in favor of a one-state solution, Israel and Palestine, and I think you may be the only Democrat who’s publicly supported a one-state solution, what is your vision for a one-state solution that meets both Palestinian and Israeli-Jewish national aspirations.

RT: Absolutely. Let me tell you, I mean, for me, just two weeks ago or so, we celebrated, but just took a moment I think in our country to remember the Holocaust. There’s kind of a calming feeling, I always tell folks, when I think of the Holocaust and the tragedy of the Holocaust and the fact that it was my ancestors, Palestinians who lost their land and some lost their lives, their livelihood, their human dignity, their existence in some ways had been wiped out.. all of it was in the name of trying to create a safe haven for Jews, post the Holocaust, post the tragedy and horrific persecution of Jews across the world at that time. And, I love the fact that it was my ancestors that provided that, right? In many ways. But they did it in a way that took their human dignity away, right? And it was forced on them. And so, when I think about a one-state, I think about the fact, why can’t we do it in a better way where — and I don’t want people to do it in the name of Judaism, just like I don’t want people to use Islam in that way — it has to be done in the way of values around equality and around the fact that you shouldn’t oppress others so that you can feel free and safe. Why can’t we all be free and safe together?

DK: But a one-state solution, with the right of return, just the math suggests that Jews would become a minority in that state…

RT: But Dan, it’s not up to us to decide what it looks like. Just like, when I have my African-American teachers taught me about neighborhoods they couldn’t live in, taught me about places they couldn’t work, but it’s important to understand that separate but equal didn’t work here, right, and then we have to allow the self-determination to happen there, but for me that’s the lens I bring to it, but I’m not a leader there.

DK: But isn’t it giving up, to say we’re just going to — the idea of two-state solution with two independent states that are sovereign and independent and free, aren’t you giving that up, that dream?

RT: But I didn’t give it up, I didn’t give it up. Netanyahu and his party gave it up and the Israeli government gave it up.

DK: It’s not worth fighting for anymore?

RT: It’s not for me to decide, it’s the will of the people. If Netanyahu got up tomorrow morning and decides, you know what I’m going to take down the walls. I’m not going to expand the settlements, enough is enough, I really want to push toward a two-state solution. He has every power, every power to do that. And then people might, like myself and others will truly believe in that. But uprooting people all over again, to say that that’s going to — because do you understand, when you look at the landscape, just map it out, it is almost, absolutely impossible with how he has proceeded to divide, how he’s proceeded to dissect and segregate communities — that is impossible for me to see a two-state solution without more people being hurt.

You either favor a one-state solution or a two-state solution. If you favor a one-state solution the choice is between a democratic pluralistic secular nation or a non-democratic apartheid nation. I suppose there’s a fourth choice: war and genocide; but I’d like to think that’s still unacceptable in the 21st century.

I subscribe to the hypothesis that David and Dan butchered the entire story. Even the first year, the most faithful to the novels, diverges from the author’s intent. In the book, it is clear that Dany is ultimately supposed to give birth to a living child — and there is not time for that to occur in the final episode.

I am infuriated with D and D’s handling of the series — especially since we will never see a proper resolution from GRRM.

I have a former friend — a gun nut and Ron Paul type of Republican — who favored Trump over Hillary because Trump “wasn’t” a warmonger. He hated Hillary and Obama with great passion — but he isn’t a total economic illiterate and was infuriated with the tax cut, which he rightly saw as a giveaway to the wealthy. If Trump actually starts a war with Iran, I suspect that he would not support Trump this time around. Of course, living in blue Illinois, his vote won’t matter anyway.

The one thing Trump is, beyond all else, is chickenshit. I think he’s deathly afraid of committing troops anywhere where they might get killed and being blamed for it. I think this largely explains his effusive love for KJU after he stopped testing nukes and missiles, because he was afraid he’d have to back up his swagger with actual lives.

To be clear, he doesn’t care about the lives - everyone else is just NPCs to him. What he cares about is things going badly and ending up with even his base hating him. Look at Bush by 2006 - what, 25% support? That would KILL Trump

This rings true to me.

But the problem is that Bolton et al. will be showing Trump what W Bush’s polling looked like after 9/11 and as the US went into Afghanistan and Iraq.

So which will win out — Trump’s fear of a foreign policy failure that he gets blamed for, or the desire to be seen as a successful wartime president?

A controversial US preacher has become the first person to be banned from Ireland under a 20-year-old power.

Steven Anderson, a pastor from Arizona, runs the Faithful Word Baptist church and openly expresses anti-gay and anti-Semitic views.

His website claimed that he was due to preach in Dublin on 26 May.

However, an online petition calling for Mr Anderson to be banned from Ireland was created in response, and gained 14,000 signatures.

Wag the dog. Here we go again. Trump is much less popular than Bush was after 9/11 so I don’t see Americans going along with an unnecessary war against Iran which the U.S. could never win.

A likely plan for these pig-fuckers to follow is to manufacture a few events that make it a deplorable necessity to go to war. That has worked way too often in past US history to rule out, even though Trump is both unpopular and fundamentally a coward.

The later explanation, sums of areas of rectangles, was more intuitive.

Not at all. The manufacturing of events is in progress. The deplorable necessity to go to war is TBD.

Math is funny that way. Intuition and getting the proofs rock solid with good notation etc. are both important.

E.g., Newton had godlike mathematical intuition for calculus, but a shitty notation. As a result mathematics in England after Newton lagged behind mathematics elsewhere in Europe for a while because the English were using bad notation in deference to Newton.

This is the kind of jury verdict that gets carved down to a tiny fraction of what it started out as by the judge.

This whole model of trying to force companies to behave well via essentially arbitrary and capricious tort law verdicts is asinine.

re: #287 Hecuba’s daughter

I’m thinking they needed some way to wrap up the series in the last, short season, and what better way than Dany to go mental and burn everything to the ground? As the bells were ringing out, you could just see the wheels in her mind turning: a peaceful takeover of King’s Landing, Jon being pushed onto the throne in her place, the whole dream of taking the throne for her family dashed to pieces. I was expecting something more in the line of Dany and Drogon torching the Red Keep with Cersei inside, and leaving the populace alone. Torching the entire city was something younger, first-season Dany would have done, as a petulant teenager, not supposedly older and wiser Dany the Queen.

It was a cheap way to end several plotlines, get the audience’s attention (though the burning/strafing went on way too long), and leave the final episode open to even more cold-blooded murder of and by tyrants.
